A new application called ‘social energy’ was recently launched on the social networking site Facebook by Opower  and the environmental advocacy group, the Natural Resources Defense Council. The application was announced on 17th October which has been designed to create awareness of saving energy.

Social energy thus encourages to encourage efficiency of energy. The application has been designed by Opower and will be launched early next year through the 'Green' page of Facebook.

The new application will allow the users to compare the energy usage to the national average and will also encourage other people to participate. Opower vice president of marketing and strategy, Ogi Kavazovic had said that to build a profile the users have to enter their electricity usage information in either kilowatt hours or dollars.

The Company Overview states, 'With more than 500 million people around the world using Facebook, our greatest opportunity to affect environmental change is through the power and reach of our platform. We are working to develop programs and initiatives that can enable and empower people on Facebook to get engaged in environmental issues and solutions. By enabling millions of people from diverse backgrounds to easily connect and... share, Facebook can play a unique role in promoting efforts to achieve a sustainable future.'

The other features of the application would include competition among the users to reduce the electricity usage and to also form groups. The application  would encourage people to reduce the consumption of energy for environmental and financial reasons. The features of the Opower’s energy efficient application will be used by the application.  The company also found that the comparisons with the neighbors encourages in raising the awareness among the electricity consumers.

The description of the initiative on the Facebook page states, 'This Page is a resource for people interested in learning more about Facebook's commitment to environmental stewardship. We built this site to share - and get feedback - about our efforts to promote sustainability through our business practices, partnerships and, most importantly, the use of the Facebook platform.'
